Albuquerque’s Global Ties: Celebrating International Connections

Albuquerque’s rich tapestry of cultures is not only a reflection of its diverse population but also a testament to its strong international connections. Through sister city relationships and global festivals, the city fosters cultural exchange and economic growth.

Albuquerque Sister Cities Foundation

Established in 1965, the Albuquerque Sister Cities Foundation has been instrumental in building bridges between Albuquerque and cities worldwide. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, it connects people across borders, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. The foundation’s efforts have led to partnerships with 12 sister cities, each bringing unique cultural and economic exchanges to our community.

¡Globalquerque! Annual Celebration

Since 2005, ¡Globalquerque! has been a cornerstone event, celebrating world music and culture in Albuquerque. This annual festival features performances from artists across six continents, offering residents and visitors a chance to experience global traditions firsthand. The event includes concerts, workshops, films, and a Global Village showcasing international cuisine and crafts. In recent years, the festival has been held at Civic Plaza, making it more accessible to the community.

Economic and Cultural Impact

These international connections have tangible benefits for Albuquerque. Events like ¡Globalquerque! attract tourists, boosting local businesses and the hospitality industry. Moreover, sister city relationships open avenues for trade, education, and cultural exchange, enriching the city’s social fabric and economic landscape.

By embracing its global ties, Albuquerque continues to position itself as a vibrant, inclusive city that values and celebrates diversity.
